Install an Irrigation System
Watering your lawn early in the morning before the heat of the day is optimal to avoid evaporation. Installing an irrigation system will give you full control over how your lawn is hydrated, ensuring an even dispersal of water that penetrates the root system of your lawn on a timed schedule. Many homeowners make the mistake of overwatering their lawns in the hot summer months. Aim for 1 inch per week and make sure you are complying with any water use restrictions in your area.
Keep Grass High
During the summer months, keep your mower blade sharp and set higher to keep your grass tall. This will keep the root system of your lawn more heavily shaded and lock in hydration to encourage deeper root growth.
Use Fertilizer
Apply a slow-release, low-nitrogen fertilizer to your lawn to reintroduce nutrients back to your soil over time. Fertilizer will help your lawn grow lush and green even in summer and help make your grass resistant to disease and damage from pests.
Control Weeds
Most weed killer sprays wreak havoc on the environment, can be dangerous around pets and children, and have the unintended side effect of killing your grass. If you have invasive weeds cropping up in your lawn, hand-pick them as much as possible and spread mulch where you can to strategically prevent them from growing back and retain the moisture levels of the soil.
Aerate Soil
The soil health in your yard determines the health of the grass that grows. Summer is the best time of year to aerate warm-season grass to improve soil compaction and allow water and nutrients to reach the roots of your grass.
Address Problem Spots
If you have areas of your yard that have become frequent walkways, are your pet’s favorite spot to leave waste, or get more sun exposure, you may notice yellowing grass or bald spots. Give these areas of your yard extra attention to keep them healthy. Consider putting a walkway through your yard to prevent unwanted walking trails and always pick up pet waste immediately.
Consider Synthetic Turf
For many homeowners, the care and energy needed to maintain a traditional lawn during hot summer months doesn’t feel worth the effort. If you enjoy the beauty and functionality of a green lawn but don’t want to spend as much time on upkeep, consider installing a synthetic turf lawn. While the initial investment is higher than grass sod, it saves you time and money throughout its lifespan.
